Searching Systematically for your Research Online

The aim of this workshop is to teach the skills for developing a research question, searching, selecting and managing the best available evidence to answer that research question, according to a defined, planned and consistent method.

Learning Outcomes
1. Develop a good research question
2. Describe your question using a recognized template such as PICO
3. Select appropriate resources (Books, book chapters, databases, websites, unpublished theses etc.)
4. Build awareness of functionalities such as controlled vocabulary, Boolean logic, synonyms, language, spelling within resources.
5. Develop a search strategy (thesauri/free text searching, broaden/narrow searches).
6. Explore exhaustive searching techniques (related items, reference lists, hand searching, internet searching, search engines).
7. Select papers using inclusion/exclusion criteria (look at abstracts, results, methods, etc).
8. Create accounts to save searches and set up a personal library to produce a bibliography.
9. Manage results using a reference management system

Programme

The session comprises 3 parts

Part 1

  • Develop a focused research question

  • Describe your question using a recognised template such as PICO

  • Understand the different types of clinical questions and their corresponding level of evidence

Part 2 

  • Understand the different sources of information
  • Understand and use search language
  • Develop a search strategy that is systematic and reproducible

Part 3

  • Understand the importance of documenting your search
  • Understand Prisma workflow and checklist for transparency, accountability and replicability

Additional information

  • The training will be taught in 3 separate parts with a total duration of 3.5 hours.  It will be delivered by two Librarians from HSE Health Library Ireland and will include hands-on exercises.
  • Pre-course materials and requirements will be emailed to registered participants before the training.
  • Assessment will be performed and a certificate delivered after completion of the training.
  • A feedback survey will be sent after the training.
