How to develop your search strategy Online
This training session is designed to help participants improve their ability to find relevant and reliable information efficiently. It provides practical guidance on defining a clear research question, identifying key concepts, select effective keywords and search techniques.
Who should attend
HSE staff and authorised users of the HSE Library Service who are undertaking a literature review as part of an academic course, developing a PPPG or who just want to learn how a well-developed search strategy helps save time, refine results, and ensure credibility.
Learning outcomes
- Define your information need clearly
Understand the scope of your topic and break it into key concepts or questions. - Identify and generate effective keywords
Select appropriate search terms, including synonyms, related terms, and variations. - Use search techniques effectively
Apply tools such as Boolean operators (AND, OR) quotation marks, and truncation to refine results. - Choose suitable search tools and databases
Gain understanding of resources available e.g. databases, search engines and specialised resources. - Refine and adapt your search strategy
Modify keywords and search methods based on initial findings to improve outcomes.
